When Fred was in Pylea, she told herself stories of the futures she could have, to keep herself from going completely mad. Stories of Ph.D.'s and the solution to Fermat's Last Theorem.

Now that she is back in Los Angeles, she sits under her kitchen table and pretends she isn't crazy. She tells herself stories of another future, with a kitchen and a kitten and a house and a redhead who keeps eye of newt between the tarragon and the sage. Stories without the words "I'm seeing someone." Stories as real as a Ph.D. and Fermat's Last Theorem.
